This week we look at some Aboriginal celebrities in Vibe online at http://www.vibe.com.au in the Celebrity Health section and how they have worked and planned to achieve their goals. You will need to click on page 2 of the drop down menu! We hear about how they get fit and stay fit and how some of them have got through hard times in their lives. There is also an opportunity to read about Daniel Geale and Kylie Farmer and find out their ideas. As a group, think about some of the best ways to succeed and also name your top tips for persisting and surviving when times get tough. Our identities come from our cultural backgrounds AND they are also made from what we DO in our lives. I want to hear about the things that people are into – if you are into sport, how much do you train each week? If you enjoy art, how much time do you spend at what you love? One thing is for certain, we build our identity through our actions and our persistence…
Cheers

Yo rappers!
We read the interview about actress Kylie Farmer, who has recently played the role of Juliet in “Romeo and Juliet”.
She has faith in herself. She is very proud to be Aboriginal and made sure to learn traditional skills like gathering food, cooking, making fire and learning about bush medicine. Now she wants to share her knowledge with younger generations.
We can keep our bodies healthy by: eating lots of fruit and vegies, doing fitness every day, sleeping well, doing yoga, drinking lots of water, and eating at least three meals a day to get all your vitamins and minerals.
Peace out y’all rappers out there.

Hi rappers,
This is the best half of 5/6 D’s Year 5 students!
We read the interview with Aboriginal boxer, Daniel Geale. He has been very successful since turning pro. He’s never lost a match and has made 12 knockouts.
Daniel knows that he owes his success partly to his trainer, Jeff Fenech. Jeff helped Daniel remember all his skills, to never give up, and to believe in himself. Daniel also admires other successful Aboriginal boxers. They are his role models.
We should try to stay healthy by: exercise, eating fruits and vegetables, drinking lots of water, having regular meals, not skipping breakfast, and getting our daily calcium (dairy products).
We learned today, the hard way, to make sure to always highlight and copy our text (Control C) before clicking on “Submit Comment”, because the computer had not logged us in properly, and we lost our typing. But like Daniel Geale, we never give up!

Good day Penrith rappers – great to hear from everyone in 5/6D!
To the Fantastic Nine – thanks for sharing what you learned about Kylie Farmer – I think it’s great that she has faith in herself and wants to pass her culture on – she has a lot of good ideas.
Good day best half! Sorry to hear you had some issues with your typing and had to re-copy all your text! You are very persistent, like Daniel Geale – he really seems to be saying that healthy habits, lots of exercise and a good diet are really important for building a strong identity.
Great work, 5/6D…
Cheers

Yo!! What’s up people?
We are back to blog, us four girls (our newly formed group) from Mount Hutton P.S. We’ve read both of the informative articles but are blogging this week about Kylie Farmer.
Kylie’s culture has been her priority from day one. Her heart and soul lie with her home and family and no matter what, she will always put them first.
Our top tips for persisting and surviving tough times are: Talk to an adult you trust, Never give up, Always try hard and believe and trust in yourself and others.
Our interests include: Netball, dancing and singing. We work exceptionally hard to achieve our goals, whether easy or difficult.
Have fun and talk soon,

TASK 3
04/06/09
WHY DO YOU THINK THAT DANIEL SUCCEEDED IN BOXING?
Daniel always had determination and he never thought of giving up. He always believed in himself and always had confidence. He trained hard and respected his trainers.
He always is polite to his competition and a good sport. When he was in the ring he always let his fist do the talking. He set goals and always tries his best to achieve them.
He had support from his friends and family and they were always there for him.
5/6H believes that Daniel was a quiet achiever and a great sportsman.
WHAT IS KYLIE FARMER’S PRIORITY? WHY? WHAT DOES SHE BELIEVE ABOUT IDENTITY?
Her priority is to know her family and where she came from first to do anything else. “You have to know where you start off to finish” said Kylie.
SUCCEED, STAYING FIT AND GETTING THROUGH TROUBLED TIMES.
• Focus on goals small to big.
• Move on.
• Family support.
• Enjoying what you do best.
• Self encouragement.
• Never give up.
• Be good to others.

Good day to the Fab 4 and to Hogan’s Heroes!
Love your work…
I agree with you, Fab 4, about trying to trust yourself and others and also about NEVER giving up! I’m impressed that you work exceptionally hard to reach your goals – good on you, girls!
Hogan’s Heroes – You have obviously done a lot of thinking about the factors that have led to Daniel Geale and Kylie Farmer’s success – it seems to be important to know who we are and to try very hard. I really liked the 7 ideas you listed for succeeding and getting through hard times – one thing is for certain we all have them!
I’m looking forward to hearing from you again, Fab 4 and Hogan’s Heroes.
Cheers

Hi rappers,
5B Besties reporting in. Mr McLean was at a conference last week, so we worked with Mrs Whitton. She has never done rapping or blogging before. Here are our extra responses to Rap Point 1 – and some of Rap Point 2. (We took the rap sheets home for homework the night before, so we would have all our answers ready for Mrs Whitton before she arrived!)
Why is our culture important?
* So you can know your history
* To learn about yourself and your personal history
* It helps us understand why people are different
* To learn about our ancestors
* It tells us where our clothes, food, art, behaviour, and the way we live, comes from
* Culture makes us unique.
Some messages for leading a good life:
* Respect your elders
* Be proud of who we are
* Be grateful for what we have and who we are
* Happiness is most important
* Live healthily and exercise
* Education is important.

Hi rappers,
5B Grasshoppers here. Here is our response to Rap Points 1 and 2.
Cultures help us identify who we are, where we come from, and why we are different. It’s good to have special ways we live our lives, and interact with our families. We hold beliefs that are important to us and get us through times of trouble.
“You need to know part of your language (mother tongue) and to clean up before having fun.”
“In my country, men don’t have to cook. They go to work, and work hard, to get money look after the family. Women don’t have jobs outside the home because they look after the children.”
“Honour your father and mother.”
“The family structure is one of the most important structures known to human beings.”
“The Egyptian pyramids are important to people from my country because they are one of the Seven Wonders of the World.”
“Be honest with yourself.”

* It shapes our personalities
* It’s good to know our roots, habits and culture.
Some messages for leading a good life and getting through times of trouble:
* Follow water restrictions to keep our water available to use
* Eat healthily, be happy

Good day Penrith PS rappers – Love your work!
Good on you Mrs Whitton and 5B Besties – I am so impressed that everyone did their homework and came back with such good answers about why our culture is so important to know about and with such great messages for living a good life! Happiness is most important and our cultures make us unique – I think these are really significant ideas!
5B Grasshoppers – thanks so much for your direct quotes – I feel that I can hear you talking – it’s fantastic. There has obviously been so much good discussion here – about people’s cultures and also about being honest with oneself. Our beliefs and our cultures certainly shape who we are – that’s why each country has a different vibe when we visit and different foods, customs and languages.
5B Bees – you also have some excellent ideas here. I am interested that people have many ideas in common – it seems to be so important to show respect, doesn’t it? I love this suggestion – a good day may come only once in a lifetime, so be ready for it! Some people say, “Live every day as if it is your last day” and others say, “Today is the first day of the rest of my life”. Caring for the environment – that’s a great message too.
All the best!
Lizzie

Dear Rappers
5/6S at Wollondilly would like to apologise for not getting our response to you on time. Last week we had so much on and things just didn’t get completed. We have read about Daniel Geale and Kylie Farmer.
Daniel
• He trained very hard and never gave up
• He believed in himself
• Whatever the outcome- he knew he had done his best
• He set himself goals and stuck to them even when times were hard
• Even when he had set backs (like not making the Olympics) he still found ways to go on
• He had lots of fans and supporters who also believed in him
• His family helped him to go on
• He listened to and accepted advice
• He was a good role model for others
Kylie
• She was willing to try something that was new and out of her comfort zone (learning the words to Shakespeare and acting in roles outside indigenous roles)
• She may be the first Aboriginal to play the role of Juliet
• She had support from her family- especially her partner “ My heart and soul are with my home and my family always comes first”
• She still has strong ties with her heritage
• She has learnt traditional skills such as tool making, hunting and gathering traditional medicine and making fire
Both Kylie and Daniel have very strong ties with their family and set goals that are achievable, but ones that require lots of hard work and determination.

Good day 5/6S at Wollondilly PS
Great to hear from you! No need to apologise – we just love to read your ideas…
I think you have done a fantastic job of summarising the main points made by Daniel Geale and Kylie Farmer. You are going to be sensational high school students with these kinds of skills.
I agree that setting achievable goals seems to be really important – their hard work and determination really impressed me!
Cheers

Daniel Geale has succeeded in boxing because he is determined, he doesn’t play around and he doesn’t give up.
Cam and Tom
Kylie Farmer’s priority is her family and her culture. Sharing traditional knowledge with the younger generation is also important.

Cassie – I like the way that Kylie Farmer has got her priorities right! She cares about her family and her culture and she wants to pass it on…
